Fuel Your Growth

Fuel Your Growth

Date: 22 May 2026Posted By: MOH Kenya Ages 15–17

Puberty is a time of rapid growth. Your body, brain, emotions and energy levels are all changing - which means your body needs more care, fuel and rest than before.

You may notice feeling hungry more often, getting tired easily, sleeping later, having low energy during school, mood changes and trouble concentrating

These changes are normal during adolescence. Adolescence is a period of major physical, emotional, and mental development.

So your body is working hard behind the scenes every day. That is why sleep, nutrition, hydration, and movement matter so much during puberty.

Why Your Growing Body Needs Fuel

As you grow, your body needs energy to:

  • Build muscles and bones
  • Support brain development
  • Maintain concentration
  • Regulate emotions
  • Support hormones and growth

Skipping meals or eating very little can leave you feeling tired, stressed, distracted or low on energy. Here are the essentials for staying fueled;

The Meal of Champions

  • Eat breakfast to boost concentration and energy levels.
  • Prioritize balance with proteins (eggs/beans) and energy foods (sweet potatoes/ugali).

Hydration

  • Drink water consistently to prevent headaches and support focus.

Sleep Matters

  • Aim for a consistent routine to support brain development and mood.
  • Reduce screen time before bed to ensure quality rest.

Movement

  • Stay active (walking, sports, or dancing) to reduce stress and strengthen bones.

Avoiding Comparison

  • Respect your unique growth pace; everyone develops differently.
